Gin
Gin is a spirit that is derived from Juniper Berries. There are many styles of gin on the market, but gin can be placed in two types of categories. These are compound gins and distilled gins. A compound gin is simple in that there is no re-distillation and the spirit is flavored. It is not as popular as distilled gins which have a few different styles of their own. The distilled gins are made in the traditional distilling methods with the juniper berries and other essences. The many styles of distilled gin, like London Dry Gin, are more common and contain hints of citrus like lemon peels or a combination of spices like saffron, frankincense, coriander, etc. The name “gin” comes from either the Dutch word jenever or the French word genievre, which both mean juniper.
History
Distilled as early as the 11th century by Italian monks, juniper berries were used for the medicinal properties, but the actual credit of the invention of gin is credited to a Dutch physician Franciscus Sylvius. By the mid 17th century, gin was sold to treat medical problems like kidney disease, gallstones, gout, and other stomach ailments. Around 1740, gin became extremely popular after England placed heavy taxes on imported spirits which lead to a period known as “The Gin Craze”. Gin was produced more than beer and favored among the poor. Blamed for many social and medical problems of the time, Gin has received a bad rep. The negative reputation followed it until today. There was a Gin Act in 1736 which was the cause of many riots until reduced and abolished in 1742. The Gin Act of 1751 brought gin under the jurisdiction of the government and by the 18th century was produced in pot stills which made it the sweet gin known today. The London dry style was invented later on in the 19th century which gave us the tastes of gin today.

The colonies discovered that gin would mask the taste of quinine which at the time was effective against Malaria.
