Whiskey

Whiskey is made from many different grains and depending on where it is produced, can have many different styles. This distilled drink can be made from malted barley, rye, corn, grain or wheat. The quality of this beverage comes from the aging. Whiskey is generally stored in wooden casks for many years. During storage the whiskey absorbs a lot of the flavors and coloring from the barrel. Depending on the type of barrel, grain and amount of aging can help determine the characteristics of the whiskey. Whiskey is made in many different competing countries and some of the well aged whiskeys can be expensive. Some say the translation of the name comes from the Gaelic language and the word “iskie bae” which mean “water of life”. In Scotland they call it Scotch whisky and drop the “e” while the Irish call it Irish whiskey with the “e”.
Irish Whiskey is made a little differently than they do in Scotland. The Irish version is distilled three times and is smoother because they dry their malt away from smoke and fire as well as distilling in a larger pot still than Scotch uses. The Irish are credited as being the place of origin of whiskey.
Scotch Whiskey is distilled twice. Their barley is dried with smoke and heat which add a smoky flavor to the whisky. The aging requirements are also different between the two. They are three types of Scotch which are blended Scotch, blended malt, and single Malt Scotch whiskeys. Scotch is well known for their single Malts. There are different styles of single malt depending on the area it is produced. There are many regions but four main regions include:
1.Lowland Scotch whisky are dry with not too much smoke, clean and light. I found many references to them being called the "lowland ladies" because of their feminine characteristics.
2.Speyside Scotch whisky is one of the top selling whiskey regions.
3.Highland Scotch whiskey produces smoky, big, peaty, bold whisky.
4.Islay has some of the smokiest whiskys and is also where many tourists go for experiencing whisky.
Bourbon Whiskey is distilled from corn is made in America. Bourbon Whiskey must be made from at least 51% corn. The Bourbon name can only refer to those whiskeys made in the United States. Some of the well known states that produce bourbon are Tennessee and Kentucky. There is a famous saying “all bourbons are whiskeys but not all whiskeys are bourbons”. Some credit the southern waters and their limestone for their distinct characteristics.
Canadian whiskey is considered lighter and smoother because they used rye as an ingredient and may still be labeled as rye even though there is no requirement of rye. The age regulation for Canadian whisky to be labeled “Canadian” is three years.
