Barbaresco
Barbaresco is a red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes. It is produced mostly in the Piedmont region and is often compared to being similar to Barolo. Nebbiolo grapes are generally used to make a sweet style wine. The grapes ripen late into October and the vineyards around the town of Barbaresco are responsible for 45% of the regions production. The wine is well structured with great aromas and are light in color. East and South of Barbaresco are Nieve and Treiso which account for the rest of Barbaresco production. Barbaresco by law must be aged for at least 2 years with 1 year in oak prior to it’s release and in order to be considered a reserva, the wine must be aged a minimum of 4 years. These wines drink and age well. Barolo and Barbaresco share some similar characteristics but also have their differences. Barbaresco is more approachable due to the tannins softening earlier than Barolo wines which make it less harsh. Barolo wines have been around for centuries unlike Barbaresco which have only a few hundred years of history. Barolo wines are rich and thick while Barbaresco wines are more elegant and aromatic. They are great served at room temperature with grilled meats and vegetables.
93 Points - The Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Barbaresco is absolutely remarkable for the way it carersses the palate with endless layers of sweet red fruit. Will the 2009 shut down in bottle? Truth is, I don't know, but the wine is exceptionally beautiful and polished from the very first taste. Ripe, red berries, crushed flowers and deeply spiced notes are woven into an intricate fabric of indescribable class. I am not sure how Angelo Gaja and his team do it, but this is a super-impressive wine in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

"Gaja's latest Barbaresco shows deep aromatic layers of ripe fruit, leather, black licorice, dried herb and savory tobacco. It is extremely velvety and smooth, with firm tannins and a richly extracted fruit finish."
93 Points - James Suckling:
"Balanced and fruity with hints of spice and berries and a milk chocolate undertone. Full-bodied, with round tannins and a juicy finish. Very approachable now."
92 Points - International Wine Cellar:
"Good full bright red. Soil-driven aromas of sour cherry, pomegranate, minerals and leather, lifted by treble notes of flowers and white fruits. Dense and nicely filled in, with a restrained sweetness and enticing minty lift contributing to the impression of vibrancy. Finishes quite long, with substantial tongue-dusting tannins. This is excellent."
91 Points - Wine Spectator:
"The aromas are restrained for now, but the latent perfume is there. This is locked up tightly on the palate, with dusty tannins asserting themselves on the finish. Could exude a sense of purity and complexity if given time. Features a long, spicy aftertaste."
winemaker's notes:
Gaja Barbaresco is garnet in color. The nose is almost sensual in its complexity, with aromas of forest fruits, plums, licorice, mineral and coffee scents. The taste is long, with a complex finish with fine, silk-like tannins and good acidity; dense structure, full of super-ripe fruit.

Several estate-owned vineyards provide the grapes for Sito Moresco, among which is the twenty-five-acre Sito Moresco vineyard in Barbaresco. The name means "Moresco's site" and refers to the former owner of this vineyard. Sito Moresco combines the complexity and longevity of Nebbiolo with the refinement and accessibility of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Pheasants are featured on Sito Moresco's label to commemorate the beautiful birds that inhabit the forests adjacent to GAJA's vineyards.

The Marziano Abbona Barbaresco is sourced from two historic Barbaresco Crus, "Faset" (60%) and "San Lorenzo" (40%). Both vineyards have southern exposures with soils made up primarily of lime and chalk. Average vine age is 20 to 40 years old. Grapes are sorted and destemmed prior to vinification in rotating stainless steel fermenters. Following malolactic fermentation the wine is racked and aged for 12 months in 500 liter tonneaux and an additional 12 months in small 30hl French oak cask.
