Brunello Di Montalcino
Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine made around the town of Montalcino. Located 70 miles southwest of Florence, Brunello is a rough translation of “nice dark one”. Awarded DOGC in 1980, Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most expensive wines. The earliest known mention of Brunello di Montalcino was in the 14th century.
Being one of the warmest regions in Tuscany, the grapes ripen earlier than Vino Nobile and Chianti Classico. Brunello di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. There are aging requirements that dictate that Brunello di Montalcino is to be aged in oak for 2 years and then, at least 4 months in a bottle before hitting the market. Winemakers can face imprisonment for commercial fraud if they don’t follow the rules. In 2008, the U.S. blocked imports of Brunello because they did not have proof they were 100% Sangiovese. The event was labeled Brunellopoli by the press.
Brunello di Montalcino is very popular in the U.S. It is one of the most popular wines ordered at a restaurant.
The town of Montalcino is a small medieval village in the Siena province. The various soils in the region contributes to the range of complexity of Brunello di Montalcino. Brunello have aromas of blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate, leather and violets with more fleshy textures. Often compared to Pinot Noir wines of Burgundy with ripe, smooth tannins, Brunello di Montalcino are unique to the region.

92 Points - The Wine Advocate:
"The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous, classy offering laced with fragrant, mineral-infused red fruit, flowers and spices. This delicate, medium-bodied Brunello reveals outstanding length and a clean, refreshing finish. With time in the glass, the wine's inner perfume emerges, adding even greater complexity. Antinori's 2005 Brunello is one of the successes of the vintage, particularly when one considers the large production in excess of 12,000 cases."
91 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Pian delle Vigne comes from vineyards planted in lower lands compared to many other Montalcino crus. This results in slightly higher temperatures during the growing season and thicker, sweeter wines. What it loses in complexity it gains in generous tones of sweet cherry, chocolate and spice. The wine's texture is round, rich and opulent."
90 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Offers subtle berry and raspberry on the nose, with floral and cherry notes. Full-bodied, with good fruit and a long, silky finish. A wine in harmony already. Best after 2010."
90 Points - James Suckling:
"A solid wine, with a dense ripe fruit character on the palate. Round and velvety tannins. Fresh finish. I believe it needs another year or two of bottle age to come around."
winemaker's notes:
100% Sangiovese.
Ruby red color with garnet hues. Aromatic and complex on the nose, with hints of spices, cherries, blackberries, light tobacco and pleasant chocolate undertones. Very full-bodied and broad on the palate, with an intense sweetness. Decisive but smooth, with elegant tannins and a long, persistent finish.

"Antinori's 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne flows across the palate with sweet red cherries, flowers, spices, leather and tobacco, all of which come together in a rich, sensual style. The aromas and flavors are just a touch forward, suggesting the 2007 is likely to be a relatively early-maturing wine. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."

"Flowers and citrus fruit galore on the nose. Opens to white truffles and plums. Full bodied, with chewy tannins and dried fruits. Goes from rustic to class. Give it bottle age to mellow. Best since 1997. Best after 2012. "

"A glycerol-like texture joins licorice and menthol notes to lend this red an air of maturity, with a core of cherry and raspberry fruit. This is beautifully balanced, though the tannins will be even smoother in a few years. Fine, mineral aftertaste. Best from 2012 through 2025. 1,500 cases imported."
92 Points - The Wine Advocate
"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is one of the more open, accessible wines of the vintage. Dried red cherries, flowers, tobacco, spices and herbs are some of the notes that emerge from this attractive, fleshy Brunello. In 2006 the Pian delle Vigne is especially elegant, silky and refined, with gorgeous textural elegance and lovely overall balance. The Pian delle Vigne was fermented in stainless steel and spent 24 months in oak prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018. "

"Opens with a garnet-ruby color with hues of amber on the rim. Oak tones of spice and toasted nut still need time to integrate. The wine is bright, tonic and slightly astringent with a firm, polished disposition. Nice fruit tones of currant and cassis. Give it a few more years in the cellar. M.L."

"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino comes across as tightly wound and inward at this stage. With time in the glass the wine's inner perfume gradually comes to life, even if this remains a reticent Brunello within the context of the vintage. Still, it is impossible not to admire the inner sweetness of the fruit and the impeccable polish of the tannins. All this needs is time, maybe a little more than usual in this vintage."
93 Points - James Suckling:
"Blueberry aromas with hints of flowers. Full body, with fine tannins and a clean finish. Bright and silky. So right."
