Brunello Di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine made around the town of Montalcino.  Located 70 miles southwest of Florence, Brunello is a rough translation of “nice dark one”.  Awarded DOGC in 1980, Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most expensive wines.  The earliest known mention of  Brunello di Montalcino was in the 14th century.
Being one of the warmest regions in Tuscany, the grapes ripen earlier than Vino Nobile and Chianti Classico.  Brunello di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes.  There are aging requirements that dictate that Brunello di Montalcino is to be aged in oak for 2 years and then, at least 4 months in a bottle before hitting the market.  Winemakers can face imprisonment for commercial fraud if they don’t follow the rules.  In 2008, the U.S. blocked imports of Brunello because they did not have proof they were 100% Sangiovese.  The event was labeled Brunellopoli by the press.
Brunello di Montalcino is very popular in the U.S.  It is one of the most popular wines ordered at a restaurant.
The town of Montalcino is a small medieval village in the Siena province.  The various soils in the region contributes to the range of complexity of Brunello di Montalcino.  Brunello  have aromas of blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate, leather and violets with more fleshy textures.  Often compared to Pinot Noir wines of Burgundy with ripe, smooth tannins, Brunello di Montalcino are unique to the region.

Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino 2006 750ml
REG$52.99

94 Points - James Suckling: "Lovely aromas of lilacs and roses, with hints of dark fruits. Truffles too. Full bodied, with velvety tannins and a delicious finish. So much beautiful fruit here. Drink now or hold." 93 Points - Wine Spectator: "Tightly knit, exhibiting focused cherry, red currant and tobacco flavors, with hints of leather and licorice. Its structure is steely and meshes with the finely woven texture, leaving a harmonious impression as the spice and tobacco notes extend on the finish. Best from 2013 through 2026." 91 Points - Wine Enthusiast: "This ruby-colored Brunello opens with bright cherry nuances and loads of toasted almond and cinnamon spice. From the lower, southern side of Montalcino, this interpretation focuses on quality fruit aromas, crispness and a sense of clean linearity." 91 Points - International Wine Cellar: "Good deep red. Redcurrant and raspberry fruit aromas complicated by licorice and pungent minerality. Sweet, supple and harmonious; concentrated and fat but a tad reduced today and not yet expressing itself. Finishes with serious, chewy tannins that call for at least several years of aging. Quite promising, but lay it down. Rating: 91+" Winemaker's notes: Deep ruby red. Complex and fresh, with inviting fruit aromas balanced by oak-imparted spices. Well-structured and full-bodied, with fine tannins that promise great aging capacity; long and impressive finish. - alcohol by volume: 13.5%

Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello Di Montalcino 2007 750ml
REG$55.99

93 Points - The Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino saturates the palate with deep layers of fruit. This is a fabulous, highly expressive Brunello with virtually no hard edges and superb overall balance. It is one of the more approachable young wines I have ever tasted from this historic Montalcino estate. I imagine the 2007 will enjoy a broad window of drinkability beginning nearly upon release. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027." 91 Points - Wine Enthusiast: "Licorice, ripe fruit, ginger, lemon zest, crushed stone, cassis and wild berry notes are bold, but in the mouth the wine is lean and compact, with a particularly bright and fresh feel in the mouth. There's even a menthol note at the very end." 91 Points - International Wine Cellar: "Bright medium red. Subdued but sexy aromas of cherry, dried flowers and truffley underbrush. Silky, suave and rich, with lovely red fruit intensity. This youthful midweight is surprisingly approachable now owing to its sweetness and fine grain but has the balance and stuffing to age gracefully. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy persistence." winemaker's notes: This wine represents a textbook hue and makes a big impact on the nose with aromas of cherry and redcurrant fruit, medicinal herbs, delicate floral hints of wild rose, earthiness, a little licorice and refreshing balsam. The palate is elegant in style and exceedingly well balanced, with everything in place and no flaws or forcing. The tannins are already resolved and perfectly complement the acidity taking the wine through to a very stylish finish. alcohol by volume: 14.0%

Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2007 750ml
REG$104.99

98 Points - James Suckling: "What beautiful clear fruit here, with plums and spices and hints of flowers. Class. Full- bodied and luscious, this Brunello fills your mouth, with polished velvety tannins and gorgeous fruit. So wonderful and gorgeous. Irresistible. Better than 2006. Best after 2016." 95 points - Wine Advocate "The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. Dark red cherries, plums, spices, leather and tobacco wrap around the palate as this dense, powerful wine starts to open up. Expressive aromatics are woven throughout, giving the 2007 a measure of polish and sophistication that is not always present in this wine when it is young. Finessed, suave tannins reinforce an impression of elegance. The 2007 can be enjoyed with minimum cellaring, but it will also age gracefully for many years. Readers who want to try the 2007 today should give the wine plenty of air, as the more refined qualities only emerge over time. When tasted next to the 2006, the 2007 shows redder tonalities of fruit and less sheer muscle. Hints of tobacco, crushed flowers and spices wrap around the sensual finish."
