Cabernet Franc can be traced back to Bordeaux in the 18th century, although it was planted in the Loire region of Southwest France before that. It is one of the main black grape varieties worldwide that is primarily grown for blending. It’s lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon. Although used primarily in blends, Cabernet Franc can stand alone.
Cabernet Franc is the mother grape to Cabernet Sauvignon and they both share many similarities. One exception is that Cabernet Franc ripens earlier. Cabernet Franc can grow in a wide variety of soil, but grows especially well in sandy chalky soils. Plantings of Cab Franc have been discovered all over the world. Cabernet Franc has the same aromas as Cabernet Sauvignon and the same intensity. The wine has more notes of raspberries, black currants, violets and graphite. It is less tannic than Cabernet Sauvignon as well as smoother.
Used in many Bordeaux blends, Cabernet Franc is fruitier, and lighter in tannins and color with a spicy aroma of plums and violets.
