Gattinara
Gattinara is an Italian red wine made from the nebbiolo grapes. Located in the hills in the North of Vercelli in the Piedmont region, it was awarded DOC status in 1967.
The wine is made of 90% nebbiolo grapes, 10% Bonarda and 4% Vespolina. It is aged for over a year before bottling and then matured more in the bottle.
In 1990, the commune of Gattinara was awarded DOCG status. The region has a continental climate as well as different soil types that, combined, produce excellent grapes.
Another name for the Nebbiolo grape is Spanna, the local name. Orange to garnet in color, it has a rustic nature and aromatic bouquet. Some even say that this wine can rival Barolo with its prominent tannins and its high acidity.

89 Points - The Wine Advocate:
"The 2007 Gattinara bursts from the glass with sweet red cherries, tobacco, incense and grilled herbs. There is an immediacy to the 2007 that is quite appealing. At the same time, the firm Nebbiolo tannins are present and serve to balance the wine's more overt leanings. I very much like the way the 2007 continues to open up in the glass. Overall this looks to be a tasty, early-drinking Gattinara from Travaglini."
winemaker's notes:
Deep ruby red with garnet reflections. Aromas of red fruit, blackberry, plum and licorice with hints of vanilla and leather. Full-bodied, with intense flavors of cherry, raspberry and spice culminating in a long and smooth finish.
