Greek Red
Wine has played a significant role in Greek culture for over 6,500 years. Ancient Greeks would hold intellectual gatherings called “symposia” where they would eat, sip wine and contemplate philosophical subjects.
There are over 400 indigenous grape varieties in Greece. The most popular are Agiorghitko, Xinomavro, Mandilaria, Mavrodaphne and Kotsifali. Due to the constant blowing winds in Greece, the vines are tied together in a basket shape for protection.
These wines tend to be bright, yet inky with good viscosity. They give off intense aromas of blackberry, black cherry and white pepper. On the pallet they feel supple and smooth due to their relatively low acidity. The exception is a 100% botteling of Xinomavro, which means “acid black” and tends to have harsher tannins and a pronounced acidity that requires some aging to soften.
They have complex fruit flavors and velvety tannins; the perfect partner for Greek styled grilled lamb, as well as barbecue and slightly spicy meats.
