Grenache
“Grenacha,” as it is called in Spain or “Grenache” as it is known in France, is a spicy berry flavored grape and is one of the most predominant varietals planted. The grapes ripen late. Grenacha grapes are usually found in California, Spain, and Southern France. Its high alcohol content makes it an ideal blend with other grapes like Carignan and Syrah.
Grenache is found in most French Rhone wines like Chateauneuf du Pape and in Rose wines from France and Spain. In the 18th Century, Grenache was the most widely planted varietal in Australia when it was first introduced in the 1800’s and continued in popularity until it was surpassed by Shiraz in the mid 1960’s.
The vines of this grape are strong and great for dry warm climates around the Mediterranean region. Highly concentrated with sugar because it ripens late, Grenache based wines often have high alcohol content. The grape vines are adaptable to all types of soil conditions but prefer hot, dry soils. The thin skinned and pale color makes it a great grape for Rose.
Spain and France have the majority of Grenache grown; however, there are areas in Australia and Italy as well. Grenache is found in the Italian wine Cannonau in Sardinia.
Grenache adds fruit, body and complex notes of black currants, leather, coffee, black cherries and spices. These wines aren’t suitable for aging and should be consumed early.

"A huge load with sophistication and style to go with tons of raw power. Tobacco, balsam wood and pure blackberry aromas are stylish and enticing. Shows body and structure on the palate along with black fruit, mocha, chocolate and toast flavors. Long and heavenly on the finish. Drink now through 2015. M.S."

Winemaker's notes:
Dark purple core with a fuchsia rim. Very dense aromas of plum, graphite, blackberry, white pepper and lighter floral hints. Very full bodied on the palate with well balanced acid and big ripe tannins. Sweet and full with great stone and nickel minerality. Sweet blackberry and vanilla with long lingering roasted cocoa beans in the finish.

91 Points - International Wine Cellar:
"Inky purple. Ripe black raspberry and cherry liqueur scents are brightened by zesty pepper and allspice nuances. Plush and sweet, with powerful cherry and red berry compote flavors given lift by juicy acidity. Gains flesh and depth on the impressively long, spicy finish, which is given shape by fine-grained tannins."
Winemaker's notes:
It has a dark ruby color with shades of purple. On the nose there is a rich aroma of ripe berries with hints of floral tones typical of the Garnacha, a unique variety. In the mouth, it is a full bodied rich wine with a taste of blackberries, strawberries and hints of leather, vanilla and plums. It is perfectly combined with a sweet and pleasant tannin that leads to a long, balanced and smooth finish.

95 Points - The Wine Advocate:
"The 2005 Grenache Romas Vineyard delivers more complexity than the Onkaparinga, both aromatically and on the palate. An enticing perfume of damp earth, truffle, clove, black cherry, and blackberry is followed by a full-bodied, powerful, structured wine which will need a decade to reveal its full potential. Although it oozes with fruit and can be enjoyed now, it merits extended cellaring. "
94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Firm in texture, this is tremendously generous with its red cherry and lingonberry flavors. A bit tart, but so fleshy that it wins the day, picking up some welcome minerality as the finish goes on and on. Best from 2010 through 2017. 500 cases imported."
93 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
" The most full-bodied and richly textured of the 2005 Grenaches from Clarendon Hills is the Romas. Its blackberry, chocolate and dried-spice flavors come at you in plush waves, showing great persistence on the finish. Despite the Cellar Selection designation, it's probably best to drink this wine by about 2015."
winemaker's notes:
Dry spiced and savory fruited palate is supported by complex tannin structure. Acidity and tannin are expressed in this layered and multi-dimensional example.

Truly a vineyard in the bottle, intensely earthy, gamey, luscious red raspberries in the warm sun. -Charles Smith
90% Grenache, 10% Syrah
From the Armada Vineyard, of Cayuse and Christophe Baron fame. Armada Vineyard ia a very stony, ancient riverbed, located on the floor of the Walla Walla Valley. This vineyard is one of the very few in the Valley that is farmed biodynamically.
"The Boy" was the first wine Charles Smith made that was not Syrah and as a result, put the "K" on the back label. Of course, this left a simple white label, reminiscent of the Beatles White Album. However, one thing lead to another and it all left Charles thinking of yet another musical artist, French chanteur Serge Gainsbourg and his song, The Boy. The lyric's go "I'm the boy who can enjoy invisibility," a sentiment much appreciated by Charles. Thus K The Boy label came to be.
