Merlot
Merlot is a close relative to Cabernet Sauvignon but matures much faster. Merlot is currently the most popular grape for vineyards, even beating out Cabernet Sauvignon since the early 1990’s. A little more difficult to grow due to being susceptible to mold and fungus, Merlot is able to mature in cooler regions.
Lower in tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is often used as a blending grape. Most Merlot wines have a medium body and can range from a fruity, smooth style to a high tannic structure. White Merlot is produced the same way as White Zinfandel. The resulting pink coloring is from the removal of the grape skins immediately. Some Merlot wines have the ability to age well but should be consumed within 4-8 years.
