Negroamaro
Negroamaro is a red wine varietal that produces a very deep colored wine. Found in the southern part of Italy, this grape produces great wine in regions of Salento and Puglia.
Negro means “black” and amaro means “bitter,” which could describe how this grape is. Some say the name should be translated in Greek since the Greeks inhabited the heel of Italy thousands of years before the Italians, making the translation from the Greek “the blackest of the black.”
The vines thrive in hot weather, have thick skins, and ripen in mid season. This grape is generally blended with Sangiovese, Montepulciano or Malvasia. The wines produced from these grapes are high in alcohol and are rich with black fruits mostly found in Apulia.
Negroamaro has been celebrated in the region of Puglia for thousands of years and represents the regions terroir. The tannins of Negroamaro are described as soft. In order to make this grape capable of aging, it must be blended with a grape that is high in tannins.
