Red Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux (called Claret in Britain) refers to the blended wines made in the Bordeaux region of France. The history of these wines dates back to 71AD. The authorized grapes for wine production in this region are, starting with the most widely planted, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec (Cot) and Petit Verdot.
It is not necessary for all four of the grape varieties to be present in each bottling. Meritage wine is the American version of these blends. Red Bordeaux wines are classified by sub region (of which there are 37) and growths (numbered 1-5).
First Growth vineyards possess the oldest vines and produce the most coveted wines. Geologists believe that the terroir of Bordeaux assists in creating some of the best wines in the world.
The soil structure of Bordeaux is a calcium rich mixture of limestone, sand, gravel and clay. Throughout all areas of Bordeaux, the wines produced are dark colored with scents of black fruit, earth and spice.
On the palette, there are complex layers of fruit, spice and leather. Built for aging, these wines are elegant and balanced with well-integrated tannins. Grilled steaks, roasted lamb and lamb chops complement these wines superbly.

Chateau Boyd-Cantenac Grand Cru Classe Margaux 2009 750ml
REG$69.99

92 Points - Wine Advocate: "The dense purple-hued 2009 exhibits a beautiful nose of blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers, licorice, graphite and wood smoke. Flowery and elegant as well as exceptionally pure, medium to full-bodied, admirably concentrated and rich, it is a big Margaux, but does not lose any of the typicity one expects of wines from this area, which tend to be slightly more elegant and less muscular than the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs and St.-Estephes made further north. Given its tannin profile, the 2009 Boyd-Cantenac requires 5-8 years of cellaring and should last for three decades." 88 Points - Wine Spectator: "Espresso and smoke notes frame cherry and plum flavors in this firm, focused red, which has firm tannins and fresh acidity, but turns a bit lean and herbal on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2020." -TM

Chateau Brane-Cantenac Margaux 2009 750ml

95 point - Wine Advocate "A spectacular effort from this estate rivaling their 2005, but more flashy/flamboyant, this dark ruby/purple wine has a strikingly intense nose of licorice, flowers, plums and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, very approachable and silky, this suave, very sexy wine can be drunk early on as well as aged for 20+ years."

Chateau Certan de May Pomerol 2009 750ml
REG$136.99

96 Points - Wine Enthusiast: "Wonderful concentration here; the wine has the most powerful wood spice, ripe and mineral tannins. It is impressive in every way, showing the total richness of the vintage. Barrel Sample: 94-96 Points" 94 Points - International Wine Cellar: "Purple-ruby. Opulent, sexy aromas of plum and black cherry explode from the glass, with complicating spicy/herbal nuances of bay leaf, marjoram, cinnamon and aromatic pepper. Very fresh on entry, with a sweet, supple texture and flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes vibrant and very persistent, with an intriguing balsamic quality and firm, building tannins. This may not be the longest-lived Pomerol of the vintage, but it should offer a decade or two of decadent drinking pleasure. Great stuff. Barrel Sample: 91-94 Points " 93 Points - Wine Spectator: "I love the dark fruit and underlying aromas of fresh herbs and dried flowers. Full-bodied, with a lovely silky texture and a clean, fresh, fruity and delicate finish. Barrel Sample: 90-93 Points " 93 Points - The Wine Advocate: "A bruising, black/purple-hued, full-bodied wine, the 2009 Certan de May displays notes of charcuterie, smoked game, herbs, black truffles, roasted meats, cassis and black cherries. This backward, robustly-styled Pomerol is loaded with tannin as well as extract. Give this full, powerful 2009 a decade of cellaring and drink it over the following 30+ years. I'm sure it is not better than the immortal 1982 Certan de May. Rating: 93+"

Chateau Cos D'Estournel Saint-Estephe 2005 750ml
REG$284.99

#28 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2008 98 Points - Wine Spectator: "Black in color, with aromas of orange peel, new leather, currant, berry and Christmas pudding. Full-bodied, with layers of velvety tannins and a long, long finish of fruit and spices. The cashmere texture is all there. 2003 plus 2000 equals 2005." 98 Points - The Wine Advocate: "While I am not convinced the 2005 Cos d'Estournel will eclipse the compelling 2003 Cos, it is unquestionably another superb classic from proprietor Michel Reybier and his brilliant winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats. Made from an unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (78%) and the balance mostly Merlot with a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc, this superb effort requires plenty of time in the bottle. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as a glorious perfume of licorice, Asian spices, creme de cassis, blackberries, and toasty oak. This full-bodied St.-Estephe is exceptionally powerful, pure, and dense with a layered mid-palate that builds like a skyscraper. While there are massive tannins, they are remarkably velvety and well-integrated in this big, backstrapping effort that should enjoy an unusually long life. Forget it for 8-10 years, and drink it between 2017-2040." 97 Points - Wine Enthusiast: "Saint-Est

Chateau De Pez Saint-Estephe Grand Vin 2009 750ml
REG$39.99

88+ Points - Wine Advocate: "Less impressive from bottle than it was from barrel, this wine from the limestone soils of St.-Estephe has closed down considerably, displaying lots of tannin. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the wine has a deep color and a steely, almost Graves-like earthiness, with some spice and red and black fruits, but the generosity I noticed from barrel has become more sinewy and austere. Forget it for several years and drink it over the following 10-15+ years."
