Rosso di Montalcino is a variety of wine made from 100% Sangiovese grapes (the local ‘Grosso’strand). These grapes are harvested from the same DOCG as the wines big brother Brunello di Montalcino.
In 1984, a separate DOC was created to allow the region to produce some fresher, younger, and fruitier wines to market to consumers. Under those DOC guidelines, Rosso di Montalcino must spend 6 months in oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle before release.
This abbreviated aging process allows the wineries of that region to generate cash flow while they are waiting for their Brunellos. Brunellos must rest for 2 years in oak barrels and 4 months in the bottle to be ready for release.
With its young and lively style, the flavor profile of this grape is predominantly that of bright cherry (both black and red) with subtle nuances of clove and vanilla. This is the perfect wine for meat, pasta sauces with meat, and gourmet pizza.
