Valpolicella
Valpolicella is a region in Italy in the province of Verona located east of Lake Garda. The red wine Valpoicella takes its name form the region. The name of the region is possibly derived from several phrases from Greek and Latin meaning “the valley of many cellars”. It is made from three grape varietals. These varietals consist of Corvina, Veronese, Rondinella, and Molinara.
Valpolicella is a light flavorful, and fragrant table wine. The history of winemaking in the region can date back to the Ancient Greeks and received its DOC status in 1968. The region is mostly a mild and cool continental climate and the soils consist of morainic gravel to volcanic. The wines are produced in a variety of styles.
The tradition of using partially dried grapes was known as the Greco or Greek style of winemaking. During the 1980s and throughout the 1990s, Amarone wines of Valpolicella became popular in the world markets. At the end of 2009, the production of Amarone and Recioto wines received high awards and designation as a DOCG zone.

"Notes of black cherry, Christmas spice, leather, moist tobacco, honey, cedar and barbecue smoke all define the bouquet. It is long and smooth, with a soft, velvety finish." - Wine Enthusiast

Located in Valgatara, right in the heart of Valpolicella Classico zone, the Luigi Righetti estate has been a family run winery since 1909. Gian Maria Righetti is the fourth generation in the Righetti family to carry on the wine-making tradition. For this rich Valpolicella all of the grapes are sourced from their Campolieti Estate vineyard. 60% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 10% Molinara are fermented in stainless steel followed by malolactic fermentation inside casks containing the lees of Amarone. This process is called Ripasso and it adds depth dna flavor complexity to the wine. This lovely red shows dark cherry, raisin noted with hints of bitter hazelnut and toast.

Santi Valpolicella Classico Superiore is a "ripasso" method Valpolicella; meaning that following primary fermentation the wine sees a second fermentation with the addition of Amarone grapes and skins, creating a richer, more complex and more exciting final wine.
An intense bouquet of cloves, vanilla, cherry jam and almonds. In the mouth, the wine is full, warm and harmonious, with an elegant finish.

Tasting Notes:
100% Corvina, unfiltered. Deep, dark, ruby red in the glass, with brick-red around the edges. Very herbal, spicy nose, opening up to beautiful violets and more subtle notes of rich, ripe black fruits. Smooth and juicy texture in the mouth, a tart acidity that is fairly well-balanced, a bit too sour but definitely not an over kill. There are flavors of black cherries and strawberries on the mid-palate and prunes and lingering sourness on the finish. A bit disjointed between the nose and the mouth. The nose definitely wins out with its pretty floral notes and complexity. An over-all pretty good wine.
