Generic white wines are usually sold in jugs or boxes and are inexpensive. These wines are your basic table wines and have no ability to age. They should be consumed early and many may carry generic names like chablis or rhine. These wines are usually from North America and shouldn’t be confused with real chablis wine from France. These wines are generally fermented in large steel tanks which cut the costs of single vintage wines. These wines are also a blend of grapes although single varietal wines are sometimes made as well. These are considered generic because of the familiar names and a blend of varietals with no one grape being dominant. Some examples of generic wines include: Carlo Rossi chianti and chablis, Opici burgundy and chablis and many others. Just because they are generic doesn’t mean you should not purchase them. They are all good table wines and good for everyday consumption but for special occasions, a higher quality wine is preferred.
