Pinot Grigio is Italy's number one white wine. They produce approximately 3 Million cases a year. It is also product in France and New Zealand under the name Pinot Gris and in Gremany as Grauburgunder. The literal translation of Grigio of Gris is "Gray", this refers to the blue-gray color of the grape skin, which can vary imensely depending upon the region it is produced in. The best Pinot Grigio in Italy is said to come from the Alto Adige region. These wines are fresh Crisp and Dry. They are meant to be drunk young and chilled. Pinot Grigio exhibits aromas of greenfruit, dried flowers and minerals. On the pallet they are bright and full-bodied usually with a long lemony finish. They pair well with white fish, salads and lightly seasoned chicked dishes. Some of these wines are slightly effervescent which makes them a perfect aperitif. Pinot Gris, although made from the same grape is quite different from Pinot Grigio. These wines are rich and homey. They have complex aromas of crystallized fruit, peach, apple and minerals.
