Riesling
Riesling is a white grape variety, originating in the Rhine region of Germany. Riesling is commonly grown in colder areas. It is in semi-sweet, sweet and sparkling white wines. Riesling is possibly the best of all the white wine grapes. Although Riesling is made in Alsace of France, it is widely known as German wine. There are three common characteristics of German Riesling. It is not often blended with other varieties. It is seldom exposed to commercial yeast, and hardly ever, if not never, exposed to oak flavor. Riesling from Alsace, France is chaptalized. Chaptalized means that the wine has been process in which the alcoholic content is increased by adding sugar.
The history of Riesling can be traced back to the 15th century. There is documented evidence of this varietal in writing from the Alsace region although it was spelled “Rissling”.
Although it is not meant to be drunk young, it is commonly consumed within the first year. Most common aging periods for Riesling wine are five to fifteen years for dry white wine, ten to twenty years for semi-sweet wine, and ten to thirty years or more for sweet wine. It gets its ability to age from the high acidity in the grape. Some of the more expensive Rieslings are the ones produced from a late harvest. The wine is made very carefully and delicately because if the grapes are broken or bruised, it could cause more tannins into the juice which would throw the balance off. The grapes are chilled constantly through the winemaking process because it helps crystallize the acids for removal before bottling.
Riesling is highly aromatic with apple, peach, and mineral. When aged, it has petrol aroma. It is thick bodied and high in acidity which make Riesling great with spicy food, salty foods, smoked foods, pork, fish, and cuisines like Chinese, Mexican, and Thai.
