Riesling is a white grape variety, originating in the Rhine region of Germany. Riesling is commonly grown in colder areas. It is in semi-sweet, sweet and sparkling white wines. Riesling is possibly the best of all the white wine grapes. Although Riesling is made in Alsace of France, it is widely known as German wine. There are three common characteristics of German Riesling. It is not often blended with other varieties. It is seldom exposed to commercial yeast, and hardly ever, if not never, exposed to oak flavor. Riesling from Alsace, France is chaptalized. Chaptalized means that the wine has been process in which the alcoholic content is increased by adding sugar.
The history of Riesling can be traced back to the 15th century. There is documented evidence of this varietal in writing from the Alsace region although it was spelled “Rissling”.
Although it is not meant to be drunk young, it is commonly consumed within the first year. Most common aging periods for Riesling wine are five to fifteen years for dry white wine, ten to twenty years for semi-sweet wine, and ten to thirty years or more for sweet wine. It gets its ability to age from the high acidity in the grape. Some of the more expensive Rieslings are the ones produced from a late harvest. The wine is made very carefully and delicately because if the grapes are broken or bruised, it could cause more tannins into the juice which would throw the balance off. The grapes are chilled constantly through the winemaking process because it helps crystallize the acids for removal before bottling.
Riesling is highly aromatic with apple, peach, and mineral. When aged, it has petrol aroma. It is thick bodied and high in acidity which make Riesling great with spicy food, salty foods, smoked foods, pork, fish, and cuisines like Chinese, Mexican, and Thai.
14 Hands Riesling features aromas of stone fruit and apples with subtle notes of honey and flowers. Sweet-tart flavors of nectarines and apricots fill the mouth, and finishes with a racy juciness. This would be a great aperitif, or would pair nicely with spicy Asian dishes.
Very aromatic nose of honey and fresh apricot. Light straw color, very sweet but very well balanced with bright acidity. A lush and full mouth feel with lingering fresh fruit finish. Enjoy well chilled. Enjoy with pecan pie, sweet fruit tarts or apple pudding.
Pleasantly sweet, rich, ripe concentrated fruit flavors highlight this delicious easy drinking wine.--Rich and velvety, with plenty of sweet fruit flavors balanced by lemon-lime acidity. Imagine white-peach nectar, with a clean, fruity finish. Good weight and sweetness, but not too much, and it's nicely balanced. Even a hint of earth. A real treat for dessert.--Wall Street Journal, Highly Recommended!!! 3/28/2009.

Winemaker's notes: "The Chateau Ste. Michelle Dry Riesling is a dry, crisp, refreshing style of Riesling with beautiful fruit flavors, crisp acidity and an elegant finish. It offers beautiful ripe peach and apricot aromas with a clean finish. This is an incredibly versatile food wine and my favorite with oysters."
Our Harvest Select Riesling is made in a slightly sweeter style than our 'Columbia Valley Riesling' but still shows the elements of classic Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling. It offers beautiful crisp Washington Riesling character with rich flavors of ripe pears and peaches. The fresh fruit punch and richness is balanced with crisp acidity to keep the wine in harmony. This is a perfect patio sipping wine or would be a great match with Thai food.
Winemaker's Notes: "Our Columbia Valley Riesling is a blend of Riesling from throughout Washington's Columbia Valley. We craft it to be a refreshing, off-dry Riesling vintage after vintage. The wine delivers sweet lime and peach character with subtle mineral notes. This is our "every day Riesling" that is a pleasure to drink and easy to match with a variety of foods."
