Spanish White
Spain has been producing wine in large quantities for many years however they have gained worldwide recognition after exporting large quantities. Some of Spain's most popular indigenous grapes are: Airen which is the primary grape planted in La Mancha. Wines made from this grape are light, dry and refreshing with a lemony quality about them. Albarino from Galicia in the Rias Baixas region- wines made from this grape often exhibit fragrant floral nose. It is dry with well balanced flavors of tart lemon and green apple which give away to a long citrus finish. Godello, also from Galicia yields a dry, light bodied wine with a creamy peach and honey suckle nose. It has good acidity, lemon-citrus flavors and minerality on the palate, great for Ceviche. Loureiro, also found in Galicia is most often used as a blending grape but can also be bottled alone. Wines produced from this grape have a little lemon on the nose and tart apple on the palate. These wines are dry and light bodied. Macabeo also known as Viura is found in Northern Spain. It is the grape that is used to make the Spanish Wine, Cava. When it is used to make still white wines the result is a crisp, floral wine with good citrus on the palate and a balanced acidity. Verdejo, found in the region of Ruedo makes a juicy wine with both floral and citrus notes on the nose. this wine has notes of pear, mango and peach on the palate it can also take on some nutty characteristics especially when it is blended with other grapes. Palomino is another grape found in southern Spain however since it is low in both acid and sugar it oxidizes fast and is there for often used in the production of sherry.

"Grapes from vineyards planted between 1975-1985, situated on hillsides, soil is clay with lots of gravel and some slate. Vineyards are some 500-700 meters (1,500-2,000) in elevation. Hand harvested grapes in late September undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks, then aged 3 months in French oak barrels"
The 2011 White is made from 100% Macabeo known in other parts of Spain as the indigenous grape Viura. It was fermented in stainless steel, spent three months in older French casks, and was then bottled to ensure its vibrancy and freshness. The 2011 reveals honeyed grapefruit and other citrus in a light-bodied, refreshing, crisp style. While not the most complex dry white one will find from Spain, it is a wonderful quaffer. This delicious, don't think about me white wine should be consumed over the next year.

"Light gold. Scents of melon, pear, honey and anise, plus a hint of white pepper. Nervy citrus and orchard fruit flavors show a refreshingly bitter quality, with a pleasant spicy bite to the lush back end. Has heft and punch, finishing with good clarity and spicy persistence."
The 2011 El Coto de Rioja Blanco is pale gold-yellow with greenish hues, the wine is intensely aromatic, well balanced, with body and the fruit has a refreshing tart character. Pleasant acidity combines perfectly with an exquisite aftertaste of flowers, fruit and fine herbs.
