"Completely different from Potels old vine cuvee, this premier cru is more about earthiness than fruit. It has the rich scent of freshly turned soil along with floral notes of rose. Theres a touch of volatility adding complexity to the aroma and a surety to the structure that will hold it as the flavors evolve over the next five years. Joshua Greene, Thursday, October 1, 2009 Winemaker Notes: This .65acre parcel was planted in 1979, from a massale selection taken from old vines in Beaune 1er cru Greves. The parcel contains stony, red soils of average depth, and this is my third harvest from this plot. 2007 Harvest Notes:The grapes were harvested on August 29th. As a result of the fruit's advanced maturity and excess humidity and rain in JulyAugust, we had to harvest early to avoid botrytis. Organically farmed by hand for the third year, we tilled the soil and did one cuttingback of the top leaves and one trimming of the canopy. These measures helped produced fruit with good maturity. The fruit was manually harvested, with sorting in the vineyard and in the cellars. Vatting lasted 30 days, was very gentle, with treading, or crushing by foot, of the grapes and light pumping over. No biological additives like yeasts, enzymes or bacteria were utilized and the wine was not chaptalized or acidified. The wine was racked into barrel after a light pressing and a long settling period, then aged in 25% new oak. The wine was bottled in Sept. 2008, and a total of 240 magnums and 1,540 bottles were produced."" Nicolas Potel"
