"When we moved to the Napa Valley, in the winter of 1972, there were 14 or 15 wineries here. All but two of them made Cabernet Sauvignon, none of which was considered world class. Now, thirty years later, there are several hundred wineries in the Napa Valley, many of them regularly offering extraordinary winemaking triumphs. Our approach to Cabernet Sauvignon began by carefully searching out a vineyard site that had the requisite combination of soil, exposure, moisture and altitude to properly grow and ripen the fruit. We brought in renowned viticultural pioneer David Abreu to establish the vineyard. Lupe Maldonado and his son Hugo then took over, with their combination of old-world technique and new world knowledge. Then we simply waited for a year like 2005. These red wines from 2005 are the real deal! I remember how I felt 30 years ago when I first tasted the great Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings of 1970, and I think we have the same thing again. The long, cool growing season of 2005 has allowed us to combine the best of California winemaking with the best of European grape growing. You owe it to yourself to experience as many of these wines as you can, and one of them should certainly be this bottling from the 500 or so cases that we produced. This has to be one of the best vintages in recent California winemaking history."
